Coverage Of Sharksavers Event For The Sharkwater DVD Release

By Matt J. Weiss, April 19, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)

Last week I attended the Sharksavers party for the Sharkwater DVD release. Sharksavers, a Non-For Profit Charity dedicated to saving sharks by increasing awareness, educating people, bringing organizations together and empowering a grassroots effort to protect and sustain sharks on a global scale hosted this exciting night that featured Rob Stewart and Captain Paul Watson. Suffice it to say that when I left college on Friday, I did not think I was going to party as much as I would have had I stayed in school, however, Sharksavers really knows how to throw a party! After an hour of an open bar and speeches from Rob and Captain Watson at the posh Pink Elephant in the very hip Chelsea, New York, the dancing kept strong until the end of the night. Rob clearly has led a movement of younger conservations that are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in. Saving sharks never looked so good! The party was not just drinking and dancing-it conveyed a serious message.

Julie Anderson emceed the event introducing the guests of honor and a new project Shark Angels.

Captain Watson talked about the importance of sharks and continuous efforts to protect them-by any means necessary.

Rob followed with a heart felt speech, urging the crowd to help lead a revolution and movement to save the sharks that he spent 5 years filming for his movie Sharkwater.

Rob then offered to sign guests copies of his DVD and book that could be purchased at the event.

As this line suggests, they quickly sold out.

Drury Thorp, Janet Murphy and Jamie Pollack-Three of the party’s hosts from Sharksavers.

Paul Watson and crew were multitasking that night. While being guests of honor, they were in constant contact with the Sea Shepherd boat that is currently in Canada protesting the insanely cruel harp seal hunt. Just a matter of hours later, was, in the words of Captain Watson an “unlawful boarding of a foreign yacht in international waters” by the armed Canadain Coast Guard. We wish Paul and his crew a safe resolution to this conflict and will continue to support his work!

Ted took this shot of me. I promise its totally candid and the background wasn't planned.

All in all it was a great event for a great cause. Thanks to Sharksavers for putting it all togethor.
