Committee Plans Drone Identification System

The Federal Aviation Administration recently created a rulemaking committee to address concerns from law enforcement over identifying owners of drones in flight. The committee that met in late June is working towards a solution for law enforcement to be able to distinguish ownership of drones remotely. Earlier this year, DJI had proposed that drones should be required to transmit their location and registration number through radio equipment already present inside the devices.

Currently drones that weigh more than a half-pound are required to register with the FAA while non-commercial drones are not required to register.  However, newly proposed legislation may change this requirement for non-commercial drone operation.  The rulemaking committee, which consisted of representatives from Ford, Amazon, and the New York Police Department, is scheduled to reconvene on July 18. They’ll be continuing their discussion surrounding the proposals for remotely identifying drones and should be presenting their final proposal to the FAA by the end of September.
