China Establishes Real-Time Ocean Observation Network

Since 2002, the Chinese research vessel, Kexue, has been placing profiling floats across the northwest Pacific Ocean. According to China Science Daily, the vessel recently established the 400th float, which indicates the establishment of the first global real-time ocean observation network in China. Part of a larger global network of ocean monitoring, these floats make up a network that currently covers regions in the Northwest Pacific, the mid and northern Indian Ocean, and the South China Sea. China joined forces with the international maritime plan known as Argo. Argo consists of other member countries such as the US, Japan, and France.

The observation network monitors the water's salinity, its temperature, and the velocity of the upper ocean via floatation devices. The member countries hope to learn information that will help in the battle against climate change by improving ocean-atmosphere forecasting. The China Argo Real-time Data Center transmits data within 24 hours to the World Meteorological Organization members. To date, China has collected more than 1.8 million pieces of observational data.
