China has announced that there will be a country wide ban of shark fin soup for official banquets. China makes up the major part of the market for shark fin soup, which has been the cause of massive over fishing of sharks world wide.
The ban, reported by Xinhua, the state-run media, is big step for China, which has now at least shown that they recognize the issue, and it has been cheered by shark conservation agencies.
How well the law is implemented, however, remains to be seen. It's said it could take up to 3 years for the ban to take effect, and even then, it's unclear how well far way regions will take to it, given their past in dismissing orders coming from Beijing.
If nothing else, this is at least a signal to Chinese consumers that government understands there are negative effects of shark finning.
