Canon Unveils EOS M50 Mirrorless Camera with 4K Video

Canon has announced the latest addition to its M-series of mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras—the EOS M50. The new model shares various features with the company’s DSLRs, including a 24MP APS-C sensor, the latest Digic 8 processor, and high-speed continuous shooting (with autofocus) up to 7.4fps. Plus, it’s the first Canon mirrorless to offer 4K video recording.

Unfortunately, the 4K/24p video implementation comes with a couple of major caveats: a 1.6x crop of the sensor and only contrast-detection AF when recording as opposed to the Dual Pixel AF available otherwise. The more interesting news for underwater videographers is that 1080p video can be captured at up to 120fps for smooth super-slow-motion playback.

Unlike the M100, the M50 features a built-in 2.36 million-dot OLED EVF, and it’s the first to offer a new CR3 RAW format, which provides both a standard image quality setting and a “size priority” C-Raw setting that results in 50% smaller files but with a slight reduction in quality.

The EOS M50 will be available from April for a body-only price of $780 or bundled with the EF-M 15–45mm f/3.5–6.3 IS STM for $900.
