It was only a matter of time. After years of building up their sensor technology, Canon has officially entered the sensor business by offering three different models to third party companies.
Camera manufacturers can now purchase the sensors through the Canon authorized distributor Phase 1 Technology Corp, according to a report from The New Camera. The three sensors now available are a 5MP global shutter CMOS, ultra-low-light Full HD CMOS, and the much publicized 120MP ultra-high-resolution CMOS monster.
“Canon industrial sensors redefine high-performance with state-of-the-art technology, backed by decades of ongoing development and improvement,” Phase 1 states.
Canon’s plan to enter the sensor business is hardly a secret. They announced plans to do so back in 2016 and hope to compete with Sony, which currently dominates by supplying 50 percent of the market’s sensors. At the very least, competition leads to innovation. Let the sensor wars begin.
