Canon recently filed a patent with an illustration which appears to show illuminated buttons on the rear of a prosumer level DSLR. In the illustration, there seems to be a row of LEDs situated behind the buttons.
The patent suggests that the technology will illuminate buttons, but at the same time, it will also prohibit light leaks. The patent explains that it will “enable a letter or character on the surface of a button to emit light uniformly [...] without providing any dedicated separate member for light guiding and light shielding, and can prevent light leakage to the inside and outside of the device.” When, or if, this new feature will be available is anyone’s guess. The patent (Japan Patent Application 2017-147019) can be viewed here.
