And the loser is... The new full-frame mirrorless Canon EOS R is—by a wide margin—the Worst Camera of 2018! At least, that’s according to readers of photo rumors site, PhotoRumors.com. The first runner-up is the Canon 4000D, while the second is another mirrorless heavyweight, the Sony a7 III. Just over 4,900 votes were cast for 20 interchangeable lens cameras released last year.
Of course, Photo Rumors is only having a bit of fun, and they ask readers not to “take this poll too seriously,” but it’s interesting to speculate why so much displeasure was shown towards Canon’s first full-frame mirrorless effort. Perhaps it’s the underwhelming spec sheet (“just” 30 megapixels, “only” 4K/30p video capture) or the strength of the competition (Nikon’s Z6 and Z7, Sony’s ever-expanding Alpha 7 series)? Or maybe some anarchic DSLR photography group got together and decided to rain on Canon’s parade?
We’re not reading too much into it, anyway, instead reserving judgement for when we put the camera to the test underwater this year.
