It’s been a slow start to camera production in 2018, according to a new report from the Camera and Imaging Products Association (CIPA). The number of cameras produced and shipped in January 2018 is just 70 percent of the amount measured in the same period last year.
Cameras with built in lenses were hit the hardest, with close to a 50 percent decline compared to January 2017. Interestingly, measuring the production by value (rather than just number of cameras) isn’t so dramatic. This could reflect increasing camera prices or a switch to higher quality camera models such as high-end mirrorless or DSLR models.
