It’s the most wonderful time of the year again! No, not Thanksgiving or Christmas…but Photokina.
Regarded as one of top imaging conventions, Photokina is always the time and place for camera manufacturers to pull out the red carpet for their hot new releases. So with all of the rumors flying about, we thought we’d give a preview of what we might see:
Nikon Rumors for Photokina
The big expected announcement for this year’s Nikon booth at Photokina is a Nikon D600. This speculation comes after an invitation was leaked to a Nikon press event in Dubai next week promising “the launch of the latest additions to its DSLR range."
Reports from around the web claim that we will be seeing a full-frame camera for under $2,000, a real bargain in the professional market. Other possible specs include a 24.6-megapixel FX sensor, a 39-point autofocus system, a top ISO sensitivity of 25,600, and 30fps 1080p HD video capability.
Another minor rumor is the possibility of a new lens for Nikon’s mirrorless cameras: the 18.5mm f.1.8. This would be a very fast, wide lens with a possible place in wide-angle underwater photography.
Canon Rumors for Photokina
Several imaging sources suspect that we will see a new Powershot in the coming week from canon. Given the somewhat recent release of the S100, the inclination is that we will see an upgrade from the G12. A possible new Powershot in this series would have serious implications for underwater use as Canon continues to dominate the underwater compact market.
Speculation runs all over the place on the idea of a new EOS DSLR. While some experts insist there is no possibility of a new DSLR, others suspect an EOS-3D X and/or EOS-7D Mark II.
Of course, even if those are nothing but rumors, we will likely catch a first glimpse at the recently announced cinema cameras: the C100 and C500.
Olympus Rumors for Photokina
The major release rumor for Olympus underwater shooters would be the XZ-2. Following on the success of the XZ-1, little is known about the possible specs of the replacement, but it would be another important compact contribution to the underwater imaging world.
Panasonic Rumors for Photokina
It is likely that Panasonic will continue to expand their mirrorless camera lineup with the announcement of a GH3. The GH2 took hold in the underwater imaging community with a housing from Nauticam. Expect the new model to have a significantly improved autofocus – possibly the best to date – to really benefit underwater shooters.
Sony Rumors for Photokina
Last but not least, there’s Sony. We’ve already heard the announcement of the new NEX-5R. Expect to see it proudly on display at Photokina and housings to be in the works with the success of the NEX in the underwater community.
