
Bite Back - Drift Nets

New evidence has been produced showing that Italian fishermen are still using drift nets in the Mediterranean more than five years after they were outlawed in Europe. Drift nets were banned because they are such a destructive method of fishing, taking a significant by-catch of dolphins, porpoises and whales. They were mainly used to target swordfish, tuna and squid, but as they were made in ever-increasing sizes, often exceeding 20 miles in length, these huge pelagic gill nets caused worldwide concern due to their indiscriminate and wasteful effect on marine life. In 1992 the UN brought in a moratorium on their use and they were banned in Europe in 2002...
