Biologists Explore Blue Hole in Great Barrier Reef

Marine biologists recently explored for the first time a massive blue hole 125 miles from Daydream Island in the Great Barrier Reef. On their first dive to investigate the phenomenon divers descended to roughly 65 feet and discovered healthy coral—despite massive coral bleaching in the region. A blue hole is a sinkhole in the ocean that formed over the last ice age. The edges of the hole are either made of limestone or corals. Given Daydream Island's close proximity to northeastern Australia, it's surprising it hadn't been previously explored.
