The winners and finalists of the 7th annual BigPicture: Natural World Photography Competition have been announced. Presented by the California Academy of Sciences, the contest saw more than 6,400 entries by shooters from 65 countries submitted to seven categories: Art of Nature; Aquatic Life; Winged Life; Landscapes, Waterscapes, and Flora; Terrestrial Wildlife; Human/Nature; and Photo Story: Coexistence. The Grand Prize was awarded to British photographer Andy Parkinson for his brilliant image “Hare Ball.”
Among the 49 winning and finalist images were some amazing underwater images, including the winner of the Aquatic Life category, Greg Lecoeur’s now familiar shot of crabeater seals encircling an iceberg in frigid Antarctic waters; and finalist Mathieu Foulquié’s fantastic capture of a male common toad holding on for dear life in the turbulent water beneath a waterfall—as he fertilizes his female companion’s eggs as they are laid. Observant readers will remember the image as the Animal Behavior Gold winner and “Best of Show” in the 2016 DEEP Indonesia International Underwater Photo Competition. Well, it’s still great after all these years!
