The Beluga Whale that Learned to Speak Dolphin

A recent study surrounding the bizarre case of a beluga whale that learned to communicate with bottlenose dolphins was published in the Science Journal: Animal Cognition. Researchers recorded over 90 hours of a beluga whale in the Koktebel Dolphinarium in Crimea “speaking” dolphin. The whale, which had only spent two months in close proximity to the bottlenose dolphins, started to show signs of losing part of its own language and adapting—out of necessity—to the dolphin's whistles.

Over the course of the study, researchers only encountered one case in which the dolphins actually imitated the beluga whale. These highly intelligent whales, also known as white whales, have been known to imitate humans as well. In 2012, there was a case where a beluga whale imitated its caretaker's language by blowing air through its larynx—like humans—rather than through its nose.
