BBC Nature has posted a slideshow on their website listing the top ten newly discovered species, in which several marine organisms make an appearance.
The first –and possibly most striking appearance on the list- is the Pancake Batfish (Halieutichthys intermedius). This rare species of batfish has a slimy face that only a mother can love, and was found “hopping” along the sea floor in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. The other marine species, a gilled underwater mushroom (Psathyrella aquatica), was discovered in the upper Rogue River in Oregon and is able to grow underwater for up to 11 weeks.
More information on these and the other interesting species on the top ten list can be found here.
