According to Florida's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission a record number of manatees were killed in the state's waters this year. The total number of manatee deaths this year were 419, two more than the previous record of 417.
The commission warns not to read too much into single year statistics as they differ significantly from year to year. This year cold temperature related deaths more than doubled. Of course, they still fell victim to canal locks, speeding boats and fishing equipment.
No matter the cause of the death, it's still sad to hear it was a bad year for the endearing Manatee.
