
Baby Whale Stranded In Brooklyn Canal

A juvenile minke whale was spotted off Pier 21 in the Gowanus Canal yesterday, swimming near a docked cement company boat. Initial observations indicate the 15-foot whale is healthy, said Kim Durham, a rescue program director with the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research. She spent the day monitoring the behavior of the whale, a rare visitor this far inland.
"We didn't see any obvious signs of trauma, and it does not appear to be emaciated," she said. "Our biggest concern is the fact that it's just here."...
