Argentina Bans Commercial Fishing In Important Marine Area

By Matt J. Weiss, October 11, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
136 miles of the countries southern tip lies Burdwood Bank an underater island with a marine protected area of 694 sqaure miles. The Bank is extremelly important as its holds many hard and soft coral species that found only in this area. Additionally, its a feeding ground for animals such as whales, sea lions, penguins and albatross. Ecologically important fish, the blue whiting and Fuegian sardines breed there.

Top predators and their come from as far away as New Zealand to the area, and its obviously a biodiversity hotspot.

The Argentine Fisheries  Secretary has implemented a mandate that will disallow all fishing in the area. A lot of fishing is done through bottom trawling, that although targets fish, kills the corals found below that lead to such a productive habitat.

Obviously, this was an important and necessary step to take.
