Abyss Project 2007 - The House on the Sea bottom

By Wendy Heller, December 15, 2007 @ 02:00 AM (EST)

I certainly need some more time to metabolize such a complex and multifaceted event and it is difficult to condense feelings, emotions, events in few pages, but I will try.
It has been rather natural for me to think I should take part in the expedition of the Explorer Team Pellicano, considering the fact that I always feel like living in the water and I would never come out and that my motto is "The working week is but an interval on the firm land between one dive and another": therefore I could not miss the occasion to be "in the water" for a couple of weeks without ever resurfacing! I have gathered information, I have sent my curriculum, made a pair of interviews and I have been very patient.
In fact the project, that originally was to be realized in 2006, was later delayed in June of this year and then in September due to thousand planning and organizational difficulties that such a gigantic event has involved.
The economic, logistic and human effort has been huge, also considering the "location" and the difficulties connected with the transport and the management of the equipments (Cala Feola can be reached through a great number of steps carved in the rock).
"The House on the sea bottom 2" was conceived to make "normal" people, who live "normally", dwell on the sea bottom, after the 2005 experience that showed that it was possible to spend 10 days in water without suffering any serious physical and psychological consequences.
In the months preceding the long dive, we underwent numberless and accurate medical examinations at the greatest hospital and university structures in Rome to verify our physical conditions before the event and to fix some parameters to consider to analyze possible changes.
We even had some medical examinations also in the same morning we dived, constantly during our permanence underwater, when we resurfaced on September 22 and in the next days, afterwards we will have some periodic controls in the following months.

Let me underline the medical-scientific aspect of the project, an aspect that, in a world invaded by "reality-shows" someone has tried to consider of secondary importance diminishing the job and the commitment of so many people from all over Italy, all volunteers (including Aquanauts) that have entirely devoted themself to this initiative.
The great interest of the media for Progetto Abissi has not always been looked favourably upon, on the contrary, many gossipmongers have tried to pass it off as "The Underwater Big Brother", while, instead it has the merit of focusing people’s attention on the importance of scuba diving, that has always occupied a marginal sector among the other sports. Luckily we were there for quite different reasons, among which the great passion for the sea that unites us and the dives and with our facts we have given the lie to these malicious suspects.
Therefore no loin-cloth or ambiguous situation at all for the 6 Aquanauts of the utmost integrity.
