A Marine Protected Area Proposed In California
By Matt J. Weiss, October 18, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
A group of stakeholders and scientists have a year and half to put in place a series of MPAs that would protect the waters from South California to Mexico. The area covers 2,355 square miles and over 557 miles of shoreline, including that of the Los Anglos County coastal cities.
Obviously, this has been met with a lot of adverse feelings from fishermen, both recreational and commerical. The MPAs would permit commericial fishing and limit recreational fishing from these areas. When setting up MPAs, some of the hardest decisions must be how it reflect the socio economic side of the area, as many coastal cities economies rely on fishing.
