300 Million Microplastics Enter Hudson River Daily

A new study by the Marine Pollution Bulletin estimates 300 million microplastics enter the Hudson River in New York on a daily basis. The river, which originates in the Adirondack Mountains in Upstate New York, runs for 315 miles from north to south—ultimately emptying into the Atlantic Ocean between New Jersey and New York. The team of researchers collected 142 samples along different points of the river and found one microfiber, with an average size of a millimeter, per liter of water examined. Researchers were surprised to find the same amount of microplastics even in the cleanest parts of the river.

When we wash our clothing or textiles, microplastics from synthetic fabrics such as polyester, nylon, and rayon shed off. These synthetic fibers end up in our rivers and oceans. With nearly 60% of clothing worldwide being assembled from synthetic materials, it’s no surprise that a 2011 study found microfibers represent 85% of human created debris along beaches worldwide. With 300 million pieces entering just the Hudson River daily, one can only imagine the impact it will have on marine life and our food chain. And one can only wonder what our other waterways are dumping into the seas.
