2014 Digital Shootout Coverage
By Ian Seldrup, July 6, 2014 @ 07:30 AM (EST)

The Digital Shootout 2014, which ran from June 14–21 on Little Cayman, proved to be another resounding success, with 80 underwater shooters from around the world taking part in what the organizers like to call the “ultimate working vacation.” One of the industry’s must-attend events, the Digital Shootout is a week’s worth of world-class diving and underwater photography instruction where participants get to demo the latest gear for free and try and snap up one of the awesome prizes on offer in the photo/video contest.

Our friends at Backscatter were on hand with other industry pros to put the hottest new equipment through its paces. The results of their extensive gear tests—with lots of great photo and video samples—will be invaluable in making your next gear purchase.

Here’s the equipment they put to the test:

  • Canon EOS-1D C
  • Canon EOS-70D
  • Canon XA25
  • GoPro Hero3+ Black
  • Olympus TG-3
  • Olympus OMD-EM10
  • Olympus OMD-EM1
  • Panasonic Lumix GH4
  • Sony a5000
  • Sony a6000
  • AOI RGBlue System 02 2500
  • Keldan Luna 4 and Luna 8
  • Orca Seawolf 1560
  • Nauticam SMC
  • Backscatter AirLock Vacuum System

At the end of an exciting week, Louis Kahn was honored with the Jim Watt Award, which goes to the photographer who shoots the Best of Show image. His pin-sharp shot of a nurse shark’s eye—taken from just inches away—blew away the judges, which this year included included Berkley White, Dan Baldocchi, Erin Quigley, Mary Lynn Price, Joel Penner and Craig Rowland from Reef Divers.

Check out the rest of the winning photos and videos on the Digital Shootout website! Congratulations to all the winners of this year’s contest.

Make sure you reserve your spot for next year’s event at Coco View Resort.
