Last Surviving WWII Dornier Aircraft Found Off Kent
A WWII German aircraft, which was washed out off of shore 70 years ago, covered under the sands and believed the last of its kind, has been rediscovered and images have been released of the find.
The aircraft, a Dornier that is also known by its nickname "the flying pencil," was shot down in 1940 and had to make an emergency landing in off the coast of Kent. It eventually sank the 50 feet or so to the bottom and was covered quickly by the Goodwin Sands. Eventually it became somewhat forgotten. Then a fishing boat snagged a net and a diver went down to find out what happened, which led to further investigation of the site.
Yesterday photos of scans were released showing the Dornier, which is believed to be the last intact Dornier in existence, lying on the sea floor. Other than some minor damage, it is thought to be in perfect condition and archeologists hope to bring it up from the sea floor.
Vwarious sources have further details about the discovery and the history behind the Dornier, including B.B.C. and The Dail Mail.
