If you thought Cousteau wandering among heaps of garbage in the middle-of-nowhere-Hawaii was a put-on for ratings, I'm here to burst your bubble. Recently, a 13-person marine debris team working in the newly-formed Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument removed more than 13 tons of "derelict fishing gear" during a 28-day multi-agency removal effort. Before you justify the quantity of trash based on the size of the Monument (137,792 square miles), bear in mind that this garbage was collected from only 3 square miles of reef...
