
120 Hawksbill Turtles Rescued From Hurricane Dean

The effects of Hurricane Dean were not only felt by humans, but by wild life as well.
Yesterday, about 120 critically endangered Hawksbill sea turtles were rescued at a Fitts Village, St James beach, and similar efforts were continuing on other coasts in the wake of the Category 2 storm, Dean, which left exposed nests and seas too rough for newly hatched turtles to survive.
Another four swam out to sea, but were not expected to survive.
From about 4 a.m. yesterday morning, April Stevens and Andre Steckenreuter, volunteers with the Barbados Sea Turtles Project, were on "a rescue course" following tips phoned in by concerned citizens on the beaches.
The pair, along with another five international volunteers and several locals, collected eggs and baby turtles in distress from washed-out nests, hoping to give them a chance at survival during this prime nesting and hatching season...
