$1.4 Million Artwork Self-Destructs

Imagine making a beautiful underwater print that you manage to sell for millions of dollars. Because you’re talented, right? Then, out of nowhere, your print self-destructs. That’s exactly why artist Banksy is making headlines.

The influential painter pulled off one of the greatest pranks in the history of fine art. After selling his painting “Girl with a Balloon” at auction for a whopping $1.4 million, Banksy got the last laugh when the secret shredder he built into the frame activated and destroyed the painting.

“We are busy figuring out what this means in an auction context. I’ll be quite honest, we have not experienced this situation in the past, where a painting is spontaneously shredded upon achieving a record for the artist,” Sotheby’s Alex Branczik told The New York Times.

“We’ve been Banksy-ed,” he added.

You know you’ve made it as an artist when your name is used as a verb.
