DPG Relaunch Guide

DivePhotoGuide.comWelcome to the New DivePhotoGuide.com!

This new website represents a new era for DPG …  and for the underwater photography and video communities, and the industry.

We have added some powerful new features and figured that it would be a good idea to give you some pointers on how the new website might be most useful to you. So whether you’re a long time DPG’er or this is your first time on the site, this guide should be a great way to get to know the new DivePhotoGuide.

Please bear with us for the next few days as we are finding the bugs and perfecting the site.  Producing such a website is a massive undertaking, and with that comes the inevitability of a few bugs here and there. We should have all the kinks out by next week.

Take A Moment to Register As a Member (it’s free of course)

If you are a member of the “old” site, your profile will have transferred over. If you are not a member yet, then the best first step is to register for a free membership.  While you can access a lot of the site without registering, becoming a member will greatly enhance your DivePhotoGuide experience, as it will allow you to participate as part of the community. As they say, membership has its privileges. You will be able to upload galleries, comment on articles and photos, review equipment, participate in photo contests, and gain first access to DPG Expeditions.

Next, Update Your Profile & Upload a Gallery or Two

Once you’re registered, the next step is to complete your profile.  Whether you are a seasoned pro or just getting into underwater photography or video, the DPG community is a great place to share and learn from others.  Update your bio, equipment, diving and underwater photography experience. Then upload a gallery, or two, or more. There is no limit to how many galleries you can post to DPG. It’s a great way to show off your work, or just to get feedback from others. Feel free to share your DPG gallery with all of your friends and family too.

Note that when logged in, your profile page has a newsfeed of community and website activity - sort of like Facebook, but different.

*New* Review Your Equipment: Help the Community

We are really excited to finally unveil our comprehensive underwater imaging equipment guide. Together, we can make this such an invaluable resource for underwater photographers and videographers of all levels. You can help by simply reviewing your equipment. The more reviews, the better the resource becomes for everybody. Just search for your cameras, housings, strobes, lights (and soon accessories), and rate each on a scale of 1 – 5 stars, and leave your comments on each item.

*New* Techniques Guides

The techniques section is the perfect place for improving or brushing up on your underwater photography skills. We will be launching a video techniques section in January as well.

This comprehensive guide to underwater photography touches on topics ranging from super macro to over-unders, and everything in between. As a special treat, you will find contributions from world renowned photographers including David Doubilet, Alex Mustard, Martin Edge, and many others.

Each detailed guide is geared to help you understand the equipment requirements, and approach to lighting, with tips and techniques to achieve a particular style of underwater photography. Whether you are just getting started or a seasoned underwater photo veteran, there is certainly something to learn from the Techniques section.

Upgraded Monthly Contests

We have significantly upgraded the monthly contest system, which is now fully automated. We will continue to provide valuable prizes each month and have new prize sponsors lined up throughout 2010, including a big annual grand prize.

We will always post at least 6 months’ worth of contest themes in the hopes that you will have the time to challenge yourself to an assignment and shoot specifically for the contest themes. Having an objective when you shoot can provide focus and lead to rewarding results. Good luck! (ps: due to the relaunch there will be no November contest and we will resume in December with “Wrecks”)

The DPG Galleries

The DPG galleries have an entirely new look and an upgraded gallery management system. Another new feature is the ability to select the equipment used for each photo, which will link your photos to the related equipment in the equipment guide. Pretty exciting!

For those of you that are new to DPG, the galleries are one of the largest collections of underwater images on the Internet. You can spend hours viewing the galleries of your fellow DPG members.
The quality of DPG members’ underwater photography is very impressive! Most members are not professional underwater photographers by trade, but you would never be able to tell from some of their images.  Check out the galleries of our featured members - you will be impressed.

The DPG Pro Galleries are a unique collection from the top pros in the world.  This is a great place to get inspiration and to study the images from professional photographers.

*New* Special Features
underwater travel

As DPG grows, you can expect a growin
g number of new ongoing article series from our special correspondents and contributors, including professional and award winning photographers, and marine scientists.  You’ll be able to find these series in the Special Features section.

*New* Travel Section

Travel is such a big part of underwater photography, and traveling is part of what makes it so much fun. We created the travel section to help underwater photographers become better informed, savvy travelers. In Jan 2010 we will be launching an Underwater Photography Destination Directory, and a Featured Destinations section. Throughout the year we will be highlighting some of the top destinations around the world for underwater photography.
