Alex Mustard (author of the latest D3/Subal review on DPG) was at DEMA promoting his magic filters. Magic filters are easy to use, ready cut, underwater specific filters, which are used for both point and shoots and SLRs. Together with Peter Rowlands, Alex Mustard is representing Magic Filters for the first time at DEMA and with the steam they have picked up since their inception a couple of years ago, they seem to be here to stay.
The filters themselves are interesting products that, while very popular in the UK, are more recently starting to penetrate the market in the US. I had a loose understanding of the filters previously, but was enlightened to learn that they can be used for both macro and wide angle. I always assumed they were used for strobeless point and shoot cameras shooting wide angle. That's what I get for not paying attention! For SLR shooters, the filters can you give you a different look in your image arsenal, and even for macro shots.

For more information on using the filters Magic Filters has just come out with a new DVD called Shooting Magic. In the educational video, Alex goes on dives with filters offering instruction on the technique of shooting filters. He uses both SLRs and compact cameras in the teaching. I took a peek at the BETA version and while it’s definitely a resource for shooting with filters, the 90 minute video is also a great watch for just observing a professional at work. You get a glimpse into how Alex readjusts himself after every shot, or how, as he calls it he “conducts anthias” to get the show on the Magic Filter banner.
